This is an interesting development and along the line of HTML
(presentation) to XML (structural) evolution.
We have recently started to pilot a repository/testbed (based on
Fedora) for the training requirements of an European grid computing
project. Definitely have needs for an alternative approach towards
metadata provision (there isn't a dedicated cataloguing team c.f.
traditional libraries), especially to enable collaborative input (and
localisation) of metadata and digital objects among distributed
project partners.
Instead staring into empty metadata pages, may be a good strategy
would be to provide a transparent infrastructure for people to
enhance and contribute metadata at ease, in wikipedia fashion.
Service-orientation means what people put into the repository they
could reuse/links to for other contexts too via the protocols Lorcan
has mentioned (OpenURL and SRU). So, putting "edit" links to turn
metadata pages into editable forms (containers for metadata, instead
of tags!) would probably get a thumbs up here.
Best wishes
