Hi John
To expand on my off-list message, of the 65 HERs using exeGesIS HBSMR, a significant number have integrated archaeology and conservation teams using shared records and processes. The three that I mentioned were simply examples from widely differing organisational contexts (Scottish LA, small English District, large English County). There are many others, and this is certainly the trend. However my overall impression is that they are still outnumbered by situations where there is a separation between buildings conservation teams and archaeological resource management teams.
My impression is that those who have moved to integrate services and information systems have realised significant benefits, in terms of efficiency of information management and workflow, and quality of advice and outcome.
I'm afraid I can't attend the conference, but I hope it goes well.
Yours
Crispin

Subject: HERs in 2-way dialogue with conservation teams? and Oxford
conference details
Dear all
Many thanks to those who have already replied with very helpful comments. Special thanks to Anna Wilson at Coventry - I'll have a few queries for you, Anna. Crispin Flower mentioned Dumfries and Galloway, Canterbury City and Leicestershire County as existing or potential users of a combined system - I'd be interested to hear more from those involved.
Others I'd like to hear from include Cornwall and Tyne and Wear.
In the meantime, here are the details of Friday week: I'm sorry that despite the title, the details don't appear to have been previously circulated in digital form.

I'm pulling together my talk for next week's IFA / IHBC / Oxford University Conference on "Managing the Historic Environment in the Digital Age", and am keen to find out about any HERs which are in effective 2-way (i.e. with input from, as well as use by) dialogue with building conservation teams - notably in relation to records generated through the planning system, and to integrated archiving and management (if any!) of hard copy (e.g. Building Plan and Notice as well as Planning drawings, photos etc) as well as digital records.
In my talk I'll be looking at e-govt issues in the Planning system, and some of the implications of ODPM requirements.
I would like to be able to point to examples of good practice, and to draw on others' ideas and experiences in suggesting possible ways forward.
Martin Newman has been unable to point me towards any potential candidates, although he has given me useful briefing on the HER session at the IFA Conference.
Hoping some of you can help
Thanks
John Preston
Historic Environment Manager, Cambridge City (and IHBC Education Secretary)
p.s. are any of you coming to Oxford on Friday week?!
