Enron Offers an Unlikely Boost to E-Mail Surveillance
By GINA KOLATA
AS an object of modern surveillance, e-mail is both reassuring and
troubling. It is a potential treasure trove for investigators
monitoring suspected terrorists and other criminals, but it also
creates the potential for abuse, by giving businesses and government
agencies an efficient means of monitoring the attitudes and activities
of employees and citizens.
Now the science of e-mail tracking and analysis has been given a
unlikely boost by a bitter chapter in the history of corporate
malfeasance - the Enron scandal.

Employers fail to manage instant messaging, says survey
18/05/2005
One in five people now use instant messaging (IM) at work, but 62% of
companies are totally unprotected from the threats arising from misuse
of the communications tool, according to a YouGov survey commissioned
by solutions provider Akonix Systems.
The survey of more than 2,000 UK consumers reveals that, when left
unmanaged, instant messaging is increasingly used for inappropriate
communications.

Bank fined for confidentiality breach
10/05/2005
The Financial Ombudsman Service has awarded a woman £3,000 in
compensation after a bank’s clerical error led to the woman’s
whereabouts being discovered by her violent former partner, who
subsequently assaulted her.
The breach of confidentiality, although minor, had such major
consequences for the customer that a large award was deemed necessary.
