I dont know I haev never used yaim with RH7.3. We use SL3 whenever posible.

I should expect that only the kernel will need to be preserved if you did
upgrade but anyway I should expect lots of issues, to be solved though apt
which should resolve them for you like it does on debian. I would not
though expect it to go as well as on a debian box as upgrades and upgrade
support is not a common requirement for HEP.
If you need the meta package I should be able to sort it out. Is this urgent?
