There are also connections between Mendip and Cornwall in the nineteenth
century, when there were numerous attempts to re-establish lead mining in
Somerset. Countess Waldegrave's mine manager, James McMurtrie, seems to have
realised that there was little chance of success, and confined himself to
issuing leases to a succession of companies, many of them Cornish, and most
of them doomed to failure.
