medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Latin loanwords from Greek ordinarily reproduce theta as 'th'.
Examples: cantharus, catholicus, mathematicus, pathicus. Proper names
are no different in this regard. Examples: Cretheus, Theseus, Aethra,
Tithys. The Chadwyck-Healy _Acta Sanctorum Database_, which reproduces
text from volumes published at different times under different editorial
scrutiny, has 4877 occurrences of words beginning with the character
string 'Catharin' (probably all 'Catharina' and derivatives) and 31
occurrences of words beginning with the character string 'Catarin'
(probably mostly Italian 'Catarina' and derivatives but at least one
seemingly a printer's error for 'Catharinae').

John Dillon
