Dear All
Some of you kindly responded to my question on this in March and I am
pleased to remember to send my findings.
I mainly received replies from local Councils, with one overseas
respondent and several private sector.
Location of RM function
(Corporate) Information Services (IT)
Community Information
Regulatory Affairs associated with Legal
Corporate Services with IT
Standards
Corporate and Library Services
Democratic Services
Law and Administration
Split between being placed with Libraries, Archives and Information (non
IT) to Legal, Standards and Information (IT). In some cases RM has moved
around between departments, having started under Archives and moving to
IT, possibly because respondents were looking at implementing EDRMS.
There were also close links with Data Protection and Freedom of
Information.
Three places had RM sitting with Information Management.
Relationship to Information and Knowledge Management
Three organisations said RM sits within an IM function and at least one
had newly created this function. Many respondents seemed to indicate
that IM and or KM were not done at all, and some said they were done
separately. From my own experience these type of activities will be
going on, but often there will be no co-ordinated programme, or person
overseeing.
Number of staff
Not many responses on this with those who did reply having on average 4,
with a mix of permanent and temporary staff (who were permanent), and
most were unqualified. These staff were generally central or corporate
staff, with some departments having their own records staff.
Thanks to everyone who took the trouble to reply.
