Barclay & Toll - As far as I can work out Reg Toll was the senior partner
whilst C.F.Barclay was his acolyte. Reg Toll never produced any of the
reports on West Devon Mining, they were all written by Barclay who appears
to have had something of a trainspotter mentality and recorded much of what
he saw and did. Thus the Barclay papers, which are held in an old steamer
trunk at Redruth (Cornish Studies Library) are all in Barclay's hand. A
partial photocopy of these papers is held by the Local studies Library at
Plymouth.
In 2004 I published an anotated volume of Barclay's reports as they related
to the area bounded by the Tamar and Tavy under the title "Mines of the
Tamar & Tavy - A collection of C.F. Barclay's mine reports 1917 - 1940".
(Tamar Mining Press, ISBN 0-9546093-1-X) In the introduction I included a
brief history of Barclay's activities. Whilst I (rightly) credited Barclay
with the authorship of these reports I felt Reggie Toll was getting short
shift.
Without doubt Reg Toll was the key figure in 20th Century mining in the
Tamar Valley, he had a finger in every pie. Certainly he is one of my
heroes.
On the publishing front Toll's output was limited possibly two articles:
The arsenic industry in the Tavistock district of Devon, Sands Clays and
Minerals, April 1938.
The Tavistock-Morwellham Canal, Mining Magazine. 1948.
Both af which are well worth seaching out - Redruth has a copy of the
arsenic article, whilst Morwellham has a copy of the Canal article.
I understand that Justin Brooke interviewed Toll but I have not yet seen a
transcript.
If you would like a copy of the Barclay book its is still available (£9 -00
plus £1 - 00 p&p - cheques payable to R.J.Stewart) from Rick Stewart, Tamar
Mining Press, Patchway Cottage, Tamar Place, Calstock, Cornwall, PL18 9QB.
