We have gained a lot of experience recently dealing with the National Trust
regarding excavation, all of which they now see as archaeological, to some
degree or other. This includes the sections of Alderley Edge that are scheduled
and those that are not. We have developed a protocol for assessing the
relative importance of each job we propose and how to progress with it. This
incorporates methodology, recording, supervision, health and safety and is sent to
the NT archaeologist before we start. Use of the word 'archaeological' scared
some of our members at first but they are now coming round to realising the
change of climate and the need to approach all excavation in a more systematic
way. If anyone wants to discuss this further and/or see examples of what we are
developing, I would welcome contact off-list.
