medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There are at least two Uniate churches that use Greek liturgically, the
Greek Melkite Catholic Church and the Italo-Albanian Catholic Church.
The former is headed by a patriarch (of Antioch), for whom the pope is
but first among equals; the incumbent is His Beatitude Gregory Laham
III, whose beaming visage reproduced on this web page:
http://www.opuslibani.org.lb/egliseeng/003/patriachlahham.html
may well be familiar from yesterday's ceremony.
The Italo-Albanian Catholic Church (a.k.a. the Italo-Greek Catholic
Church), with a mostly south Italian population plus adherents in emigre
communities in the new world, has two bishops (one in Calabria, one in
Sicily) and the abbot of Grottaferrata. It may very well have been
Italo-Albanians who did most of the Greek singing yesterday. A little
bit about the history of their church is here:
http://www.cnewa.org/ecc-italo-albanian.htm
There is also a very small Greek Catholic Church headed by a bishop in
Athens with the formal title of Apostolic Exarch for Catholics of the
Byzantine Rite in Greece.
It is Byzantine-rite and is supported by the Sacra Congregazione
Orientale but because it is the product of relatively recent Latin
missionary work in Greece I would be hesitant to call it Uniate. A
little bit about its history is here:
