medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and
culture
From: Erik Drigsdahl <[log in to unmask]>
> Les .xv. joyes Nostre Dame (Ms.Bourges c.1450, unedited transcript)
> [1] La premiere Joye. [L'Annunciation]
the
child)]
of course, representations of the first two Joyes were very common, in
many
media, throughout the high and late m.a.
in the visual arts, the Visitation is very frequently shown with a
"quickening", but it is John inside Elizabeth which doing the dancing,
with
the BVM reacting or placing a hand on her stomach.
i can't recall any depiction of this Tierce Joye --as presented here--
in
medieval art.
i wonder if your late medieval source here has misread which figure is
which
in a Visitation scene?
usually there is no ambiguity, since Elizabeth is considerably older
than Mary
and is depicted as such.
just a thought.
best,
c
