>The Geophysical Institute at Karlsruhe University offers several PhD
>positions, starting 2005 in two of its major research projects, the CRC 461
>'Strong Earthquakes: A Challenge for Geosciences and Civil Engineering' and
>the 'World Stress Map' (WSM) project.
>
>The following themes are available:
>
>* Ground motion prediction of strong earthquakes in Vrancea (Romania) by the
>combination of the Empirical Green's Function technique, 3D elastic modeling
>of wave propagation and strong motion observations;
>
>* 3D finite element modeling of the crustal deformation in Vrancea (Romania)
>imposed by the process of surface mass redistributions from erosion and
>sedimentation with constraints from fission track data and vertical GPS
>signals;
>
>* Inversion of stress fields from regional seismological data of the WSM
>data base;
>
>* 3D finite element modeling of the contemporary stress field of the
>Nazca-Southamerica subduction zone and the Andes with constraints from 300
>GPS stations and stress field data;
>
>* Petroleum geomechanics and neotectonics of sedimentary basins.
>
>Our earthquake research (CRC 461) is characterized by multidisciplinary
>interactions between geosciences and civil engineering. The WSM team
>consists of petroleum geologists, structural geologists, geophysicists, and
>FE-modeling experts. Both teams work in international projects.
>
>The positions will be available for a period of three years; salary is
>according to BAT IIa/2. Required qualifications include a diploma/master
>degree in geology, geophysics, or related fields. Please send your
>application including your curriculum vitae, certificates, and a short
>description of your field of interest (e-mail or mail) by 31st December
