>Hey, the Anglo-Saxon > Medieval part of Manchester near Shude Hill is separated by Deansgate from the old Romano-British site around Castlefield. Does anyone know who or what the 'Dean' was...? It's perfectly straight. Was it laid over an old Roman Road...?
The cathedral is on Deansgate, which should give a clue about who the dean was.
Yes, Deansgate follows the Roman road which is part of the route from Chester to York.
But it's a bit too straight to be the original line exactly. Also, Deansgate skirts the Roman fort
instead of going through it as we would normally expect.
