Dear All,
This may be of interest to some on the list. Usual apologies for
cross-posting.
This years Conference of Irish Geographers will take place in NUI, Galway
from the 6th to the 8th of May:
http://www.nuigalway.ie/geography/confer05.html
The following is a session announcement of relevance to those working in the
subject area of economic geography and cognate subject areas.
Placing Ireland in the Global: Organisational change and Ireland's place in
networks of Global production.
This session will be of particular interest to those working in the area of
economic development in Ireland and more generally for those looking at the
evolution of global production networks. High in the rankings of the most
open economies in the world, Ireland has become a major node in the cross
national production networks of many of world's leading high-tech companies.
The resultant impact is the subject of much debate, and this session to be
held as part of the CIG in Galway will attempt to highlight some of the main
issues involved.
The success of the Irish economy over the past two decades has been well
documented, but now is a crucial time for reflection on the way forward for
a country that has caught-up and surpassed many of its EU neighbours.
Questions regarding the sustainability of Ireland's FDI-led development
model have been asked since it became a policy goal as far back as the
1950s. Supporters of 'globalisation' use the Irish case as evidence of the
benefits from openly engaging dynamic global channels of investment, while
retractors cite transfer pricing and obvious double counting as factors
inflating the impact of foreign investment in Ireland and remain sceptical
of the 'real' benefits to the local economy.
Papers are welcomed on all areas of Ireland's engagement with the new
economy. Papers should be around twenty minutes in length (to allow for
discussion). Abstracts should be approximately 200 words, clearly stating
the title, author(s) names and contact details, and five keywords. Please
send abstracts via email (as an attached word document) or by post to arrive
no later than 22nd of April to either:
