Hi Liz,
We have used a company called Monty Funk Productions in the past, which was a
recommendation I got from Birmingham Museums many moons ago. Not particularly
cheap, so we are currently investigating to see if we can find a more local
source! If you have any contacts with your local BBC or radio station, you
might be able to find a sympathetic sound engineer or producer there to do it
for you. I think the BBC here donated their old equipment to Beamish, but they
are busy dealing with their own backlog. Generally best to get someone with
experience to do it for you, as if the reels haven't been spun for a long time,
they might stretch or break if played back at the wrong speed.
Anyway, Monty Funk used to be based at The Jewellery Business Centre, 95
Spencer Street, Birmingham B13 6DA tel 0121 523 1070. I don't know if that
address is still sound.
I think I also got a quote from Phil Farlow, 41 Glebe Gardens, New Malden,
Surrey KT3 5RU, who was a recommendation from the British Libraryif my memory
serves me right. Again, never actually used him, and don't know if he's still
around.
Incidentally, getting quotes for this can be tricky if you don't know the
length of the original recordings (we didn't, as they hadn't been documented)
- you might have to go for a best guess.
Hope that helps!
