I recall that there is also a reference to Ernest Gregory working Driggith
mine in the Lake Disrtict in about 1949, in Mining in the Lake District by W
T Shaw, published by Dalesman in about 1970. I do not have my copy to hand
at present so cannot be sure that the title I have quoted is correct, nor
can I quote a page number.
When at Devon Great Consols he used to spend a lot of time in the pub at
nearby Chipshop. He lived for a time in considerable squalor in an old part
ruined house by the Tamar in Blanchdown wood. Although greying he took to
dyeing his hair using wild berries, presumably a habit he acquired in
Africa.

Rick,
He was still there in the early '70s and featured in a number of articles
in regional newspapers. See the Western Morning News 18 Feb. 1972, which
included a good photo of Gregory, and 22 July 1972. There was a certain
optimism regarding the revival of mining in the south-west of England at
that time, encouraging a number of characters like Gregory to promote
renewed interest in long abandoned mines.
