Peter,
As usual, it really depends what you mean by "support" and "learning
object". If by "learning object" you mean an IMS Content Package, you would
need define support as "storing a .zip file" for it to be possible in a
normal DM system.
However, a true Learning Object Repository (LOR) can import, validate, read,
store and export IMS and SCORM packages, and enable you to preview the
interactive content inside them as if it was being delivered in a VLE.
This includes reading the internal structure of the IMS package and all the
metadata inside it, including deep metadata.
Not suprisingly, all this is quite a bit harder than importing a single
document. Intrallect have encountered several organisations who have gone
the route of adapting a generic DM or eprints system to support IMS/SCORM
specs, who subsequenetly discovered it is much more of a challenge than it
first appears!
In contrast, you can easily use Intrallect's LOR solution, intraLibrary, to
store any kind of digital object, including office documents, presentations,
and multimedia, or even just URLs.
Hope that helps.
