Dear all,
Firstly, a new addition to the monthly Newsletter - a free poster featuring
one of this month's problems. Follow this link
http://nrich.maths.org/poster0503 to see the poster and find instructions
for downloading. We hope you might print off a copy to take to school and
persuade your teacher to display it!
And now on to the site itself... The mathematical theme of the NRICH site
(www.nrich.maths.org) this month is "Sets and Groups". This is perhaps a
topic you wouldn't normally meet in maths lessons, but it builds on and
uses a range of more familiar mathematics, including number and symmetry.
The fact that so many mathematical ideas can be covered under a single
heading shows how powerful Groups might be.
Butterfly Cards (<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2657>)
challenges you to follow rules and still be fair;
While Arithmagons
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2670&part=index&refpage=m
onthindex.php>) asks you to find the value in the square!
An interactivity called Shuffles
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2741&part=>) appears in
several of the problems this month and is worth exploring on its own. What
mathematics can you uncover?
Thank you to those who filled in our questionnaire - it is always useful to
have your feedback.
With best wishes from the NRICH Team.
