I posted a message last Friday looking for maps from the 1930s Stamp survey.
(1) For now, we are NOT looking for copies of the main set of published 1
mile to the inch maps, the 10 mile to the inch summary sheets or the county
reports (unless they have relevant annotations). We will be listing these
in a bibliography, but do not need to go into locations (although we are
enormously grateful to the libraries who loaned us copies of these last
year for scanning).
(2) We are very definitely looking for the 6 inch to a mile field survey
sheets, as marked up by schoolchilden. We have already established that
Liverpool University hold substantial numbers of Lancashire maps and that
Hull University hold East Riding sheets. In 2003, Norman Cadge of the LSE
library told me that the LSE hold no maps at all for Hampshire,
Herefordshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Lancashire and Leicestershire, and that
no county is complete with the possible exception of Rutland. It is
definitely worth other libraries checking. It would also be very
interesting to locate any field survey sheets from the 2nd Survey in the
1960s, although our assumption is that most if not all are held personally
by Professor Alice Coleman.
Thanks again,
Humphrey Southall
