Hello folks
I have been going through an old linear scheme report, which lists
information in the gazetteer using the OS Field Number. Unfortunately,
the maps in the report do not show the OS field number, and not all the
archaeology is mapped. However, in the gazetteer I have an OS Field
number recorded as containing archaeology, which I am trying to locate.
Can anyone think of a way I can find out the old OS field numbers for
an area so I can check that the field I think is Parcel number eg 1234
is in fact that, to help with recording? I understand the field numbers
were based on the old 1:2500 maps, which we don't have copies of, is
there any online or other digital resource which enables you to find
this out?
I know the Field Number is based on the NGR, but as I understand it, it
is done in such a way that makes it difficult/impossible to work back
from the Field Number to get a grid reference, unless you know roughly
where you are to start with
Any thoughts on this appreciated.
thanks
best wishes
