yes, I think this is the problem. What irritates me is that there is
native GLUT support in OSX but it seems incomplete - there are header
files but no glut libraries. There are also lots of subtly (?!)
different implementations of XFree for OSX too and I guess conflict
between libGL and libglut versions and extensions would lead to this
sort of crash. It looks very reminiscent of the "libGL hell" you can
get into when playing around with hw accelerated graphics using nvidia
drivers on linux boxes...
