Trevor,
Have a look at Challacombe on Dartmoor. This a shrunken settlement
surrounded by strip fields surviving as Lynchets. Documentary evidence
demonstrates that plots were consolidated as some of the crofts became
abandoned. The area sits within the Birch Tor and Vitifer Mining
Landscape which has been extensively worked for tin in med, post-med and
modern times.
The site is well-known from published air photographs (cf Hoskins;
Griffith) and several publications discuss the site. Eg:
Bonney D.J 1971 'Former Farms and Fields at Challacombe, Manaton,
Dartmoor' Exeter Essays in Geography (eds Gregory and Ravenhill)
Pattison P 1999 'Challacome Revisited' Patterns of the Past: Essays in
Landscape Archaeology for Christopher Taylor. (eds Pattison, Field and
Ainsworth)
We at EH have completed a detailed archaeological survey of the mining
and agricultural landscape here. If your interested in looking into it
further do contact me as copies of the report are available.
Hope this helps

Subject: Re: Fossilized Medieval Field Strip Systems
Dear List,
I am currently researching an extended assignment entitled:
'An Early Metaliferous Mining Landscape Set Amongst Fossilized Medieval
Field Strip Systems - Combe Martin, North Devon: A Landscape Study'.
I am looking for suggestions of other fossilized systems throughout the
country that I could use in comparison to the system in Combe Martin,
with or without attached metaliferous mining.
In Combe Martin the field strips passed into separate tenure
unconsolidated, leaving many of the old strips fossilized just as they
were, unlike the usual situation where when the open fields ceased to be
held in common, they were consolidated into enclosed rectangular compact
holdings by mutual exchange.
I would be grateful for any pointers you could offer.
Kindest regards,
Trevor Dunkerley
