Dear all,
If you were not coordinated before this month you will be after as the
mathematical theme of the NRICH website (www.nrich.maths.org) this month is
coordinates.
We meet the idea of coordinates and use them very early in our mathematical
careers but it is often difficult to move out of plotting points, playing
battleships and drawing shapes based on a set of coordinates with no links
to other areas of mathematics. The article Coordinating Classroom
Coordinates (<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2584>) gives
ideas using "people maths" and we challenge you not to become addicted to
the Diamond Mine game
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2760>).
It is interesting to tackle a familiar idea in an unfamiliar context and
this is the challenge of Cartesian Isometric
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2655>). Similarly, at
higher levels the use of 3D coordinates in problems such as Tracking Points
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2636>) is designed to
develop thinking beyond 2D and can help with visualisation.
You might remember that last month we ran a web experiment with our Oware
game. We wanted to know whether readers of NRICH would choose to use the
number of starting seeds in each pot as is used in the most common variant
of this game. You can review the results at
<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2747>.
We hope you find our Coordinate resources appealing and thought-provoking.
