medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Kit
The XIV century Dominican Giordano da Pisa gives an account of the
election of ‘Saint Gregory’. In one of his Lenten sermons he describes
Gregory’s election as a model for his contemporaries. The story goes
like this:
‘When Saint Gregory was elected pope, he was elected by the clergy with
the people of Rome, subsequently to be confirmed by the emperor. And
the emperors then did not even stay in Rome, but living in
Costantinople, they sent their confirmations by letter.
Popes were not elected by cardinals, as it is done today [1305] –
this has only been done for the past two hundred years – and the Holy
Spirit used to help them. It would be a very laudable thing if this
was done today.
But Saint Gregory having been elected, the emperor sent his letter
refusing to accept him. These letters, however, were lost on the way
and never arrived. So Saint Gregory fled from Rome and hid into a
cavern. But the people were looking for him, and seeing a column of
fire from heaven, they followed it, and finding Gregory they instated
him to the papacy.'
(Giordano da Pisa, 'Quaresimale Fiorentino 1305-1306', 47, ed. by Carlo
Delcorno, Florence, 1974).
hope this helps.
