medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (8. February) is the feast day of:
Nicetius of Besancon (d. c. 611) Nicetius (or Nizier) was bishop of
Besancon. He restored the city after its destruction by the Huns (?
the timing seems rather off, unless Besancon remained unrestored for
some time after the Hunnic visitation). He was a friend of Gregory
the Great and Columbanus.
Elfleda (d. 714) Elfleda was a daughter of King Oswy of Northumbria
and Queen Eanfleda. She was given as a child to the convent of
Hartlepool, and later followed her abbess St. Hilda to Whitby.
Elfleda and her mom became joint abbesses of Whitby after Hilda's
death. Elfleda was a friend of St. Cuthbert, and succeeded in making
peace between SS Wilfrid and Theodore.
Stephen of Muret (d. 1124) Stephen was a noble of Auvergne. He
founded the monastery of Muret near Limoges and ruled it for 46
years. After S's death, the community moved to Grandmont and thus
Stephen posthumously became founder of the Grandmontine order. He
was canonized in 1189.
John of Matha (d. 1213) John was a native of Provence who became a
hermit, got a doctorate in theology, then joined St. Felix of Valois
in his hermitage. The two set out to found a religious order
dedicated to the ransom of Christian prisoners from the Muslims, the
Trinitarians. The order spread widely. John's cult was approved in
both 1655 and 1694.
Jerome Emiliani (d. 1537) Jerome Emiliani was a Venetian who became
an army officer. After some time as a prisoner of war he reformed
his life and became a priest. He took to founding orphanages,
hospitals, and homes for repentant prostitutes, and in time founded
the congregation of the Clerics Regular of Somascha. Jerome himself
died in 1537 of a disease he caught from somebody he was caring for,
but the congregation won papal approval in 1540. JE was canonized in
1767 and named patron saint of orphans and abandoned children in 1928.
