I would suggest that one of the key issues that is being touched on in
this thread is not simply the online availability of polygons
representing the SAM boundaries -- this is good and very important --
but rather the exchange of the actual data representing the SAM geometries.
It is good to see polygons on a map (baby steps, baby steps), but we
should probably be looking one stage further: to download the geometries
associated with ancient monument, exchange them, and upload them into
our own GIS with ease.
I'm highlighting this, both because it is topical, but also because this
is one of the main recommendations in the recent EH-commissioned report
on GIS use in English SMRs (Martin can probably provide a copy/link?).
It is probably worth highlighting that MIDAS XML contains the capability
to do this; it would be nice to see a SAM geometry server come online
soon, but now I know I'm reaching....
