The reason it is worth debating people like Singer, Kuhse and Harris is that
they have changed their minds through debate - not dramatically biut they
have been changed.
The more important reason is that some of these ethicists have say in
policy. In Britain laws regarding sex selection - choice of babies for
social reasons are beginning to be designed. Singer and co sometimes
contribute to discussions about these policies, if not directly, by the fact
that Singer-esque is very much the current thinking.
Do you think that by not entering the debate through debating that
policy-makers won`t make policies? They can be made with or without ladies
and gentleman and I choose the former.
