Priscilla,
There has been alot of discussion on the Architecture list in
the past two months on whether an "XML element" (a semantic
unit embedded in an XML schema) can automatically be used as
an "RDF property" (e.g., used outside of the context of the
XML schema, for example in merging data from several sources).
Just last week, Pete and Andy summarized the issues in two
draft notes, "XML, RDF, and DCAPs" [1] and "DCMI Mixing
and Matching FAQ" [2]. Pete also points readers to Mikael
Nilsson's paper on the problems encountered in making an RDF
schema for the IEEE LOM model [3]. The context for [1] and
[2] is the draft DCMI Abstract Model [4].
IMO, this latest work constitutes a breakthrough in
articulating a basic interoperability issue that we have long
recognized but hitherto not been able to clearly explain.
