Subject: [SCUDD] AHRB PhD Studentship Opportunities

I?d be grateful if the following opportunities could be brought to the
attention of interested students.

Many thanks,
Nick Kaye

PhD Studentship Opportunities

The School of Performance Arts, University of Exeter, is seeking to award
two fully funded AHRB PhD studentships from 1 October 2005 to work under the
supervision of Professor Nick Kaye and Dr. Gabriella Giannachi as part of
the major AHRB funded project, Performing Presence: from the Live to the
Simulated.

The project will bring together leading researchers from Drama, Computer
Science and Archaeology, in collaboration with internationally known
performers and artists, to investigate means by which ?presence? is achieved
in live and mediated performance and simulated environments.

Performing Presence will take place in three locations: the University of
Exeter, Stanford University, California and University College London. The
project's Principal Investigators are:
· Professor Nick Kaye, Chair in Performance Studies, Exeter University.
· Dr. Gabriella Giannachi, Senior Lecturer in Drama, Exeter University.
· Professor Mel Slater, Professor of Virtual Environments and EPSRC Senior
Research Fellow, UCL.
· Professor Michael Shanks, The Omar and Althea Hoskins Professor of
Classics and Cultural and Social Anthropology, by courtesy, Stanford
University.

The project will be developed over a four-year period. Its outcomes will
include:

· a major practice/research theatre workshop series on the performance of
presence, hosted at Exeter
· the development of Virtual Reality programmes in the Computer Science
Department of University College London
· the documentation of work by six leading international artists and theatre
companies who address the construction of presence through a variety of
technologies, including live performance, video, multi-media and new media
· an international research conference
· authored and edited books and articles
· a project DVD-ROM
· electronic resources important to a range of disciplines.

Integral to the project is The Presence Project Collaboratory, a
state-of-the-art web facility created and hosted by the Metamedia Lab,
Stanford University, available at http://www.presence.stanford.edu

The project invites applications to research broadly within either of the
two following areas:

· aspects of post-war theatrical performance that address or investigate the
presence of the actor.
· aspects of media-based and new media performance practices that address or
investigate the presence of the performer.

Performing Presence will provide research students with a superb learning
environment within which to gain research experience and encounter a wide
range of relevant ideas and practices. The research programme will provide
exceptional opportunities to encounter work by key practitioners, to observe
explorations of relevant performance techniques and draw on interviews and
video documentation. Project students? research will also benefit
significantly from the comparative studies and interdisciplinary exchanges
that underpin the project as a whole.

The research interests of Nick Kaye and Gabriella Giannachi will support a
wide range of potential topics within the broad remit of the studentships.
Applicants should have a good upper second of first class degree in a
relevant subject, and, preferably, an MA by October 2005. Further
information about the project, Principal Investigators and project
participants can be obtained from the Exeter project website at
http://www.projects.ex.ac.uk/performing-presence/

Applicants should meet the AHRB requirements for UK/EU residency.

We welcome informal discussions about the project and potential research
topics. Candidates are encouraged, in the first instance, to contact Nick
Kaye at [log in to unmask] or 01392 264529. Further details of graduate
study in the School are available at
http://www.ex.ac.uk/drama/pg/welcome.html Formal applications should be
submitted to the School no later than 11 March 2005.
