And yet those same Universities are very happy to take us on in voluntary supervisory roles when their full-time students who require field work experience. On one excavation I spent two weeks teaching students the basics of how to use a shovel, a mattock, a trowel and a wheel-barrow. One rather aloof young lady who turned up dressed and made up as though she was going out for a dinner date was horrified when I passed her a spade. She held it between her thumb and first finger at arms length and declared, "I just cannot use this. It will break my finger nails!"
