It had done at least 40 years ago, when I was a kid. And nobody in
computing- which uses more data than anyone else- has ever heard of a
single datum. Except of course as a datum point.
When you are writing a label for the public to read, you have a choice
between being "right" and risking appearing po-faced and haughty, or
wriiting what people will understand easily and risking pedants picking
