A couple of points:
1. Not all phone couplers work with all recorders. We used to use a cheap
($15) RadioShack coupler to hook the phone to a tape recorder. That worked
fine. It was a while back but if I remember correctly when we moved to
minidisc recorders it didn't work at all well. There was a lot of hum. We
had the same issue the hooking the phone directly to a computer. So I'd
suggest buying a decent coupler. I think someone already suggested one
model. We use JK Audio's Quicktap ($60). JK Audio (http://www.jkaudio.com/)
specializes in telephone interfaces and their products are widely available
through broadcast and pro audio dealers (try http://www.vtx.co.uk/ in the UK).
2. Why the extra step? Why record to the Olympus Voice recorder or minidisc
and then upload to PC? I am assuming that you are making calls from an
office and your phone is close to a computer with a sound card. So why not
just use a coupler to hook the phone directly to the soundcard/PC and record
directly to your computer's drive? You'll need decent audio recording
software. Try Audacity. It's good and it won't cost you anything. See
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.
One note on computer audio recording. I generally use a breakout cord from
the coupler so that I can feed the audio into two devices simultaneously
(e.g. computer and digital recorder). This provides a backup recording.
