medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The relics of St. Maurus were taken from their original home near LeMans at
the abbey of St. Maur sur Loire (originally St. Maur de Glanfeuil) to the
abbey of St. Pierre des Fossés for safekeeping in th 860s in the face of
Viking incursions. The relics were retained at Paris throughout the middle
ages despite the pleas of the thereby impoverished community on the Loire. A
major reform of the Benedictine congregations began in the early 17th
century. It was called the "Congregation of St. Maur in order to avoid
rivalry among the member abbeys (none of whom had Maurus as their patron).
The mother house of the congregation was eventually settled at St. Germaine
des Pres at Paris and the relics of the saint were transferred there. They
remained at S. Germaine until they were thrown into the streets during the
You All Know What.
The reform took a scholarly turn in the mid 17th century thus producing the
great volumes of the Maurists scholars. It's ironic that Christopher
suggests Maurus should be the patron of historians, considering that Abbot
Odo's account of his life is wholly fictional. Or maybe it isn't so ironic.
The nave of the 12 and 13th century abbey remains hidden behind an 18th
century school and the excavated original Roman foundations lying under the
abbey were, till recently, quite visible. The church can be visited in the
summer months by arrangement with the local priest of the charming Loire
village of S. Maur.

> Today (15. January) is the feast day of:
> Maurus (6th cent.) Also a figure more of legend than of history,
Maurus is supposed to have become Benedict of Nursia's assistant and
perhaps his successor as abbot of Subiaco. He is also credited with
going to Francia and founding a monastery there, but this is probably
a conflation of the Benedictine figure with somebody else who happened to be
named Maurus.
i'd nominate this guy as Patron of Historians, providing he is *the* St.
Maur
of the 17th-18th c. Congregation of the same name.
i never have heard why the founders of that body chose him as their patron
--did he bring Benedictinism to France ?
if so, was St. Maur[-des-Fosses] near Paris the first Benedictine house in
France ?
i'm much too lazy to just look such a thing up.
but, i wish i could find some pictures of the (partially) 12th c. church of
St. Nicholas at St-M-d-F, since 12th c. churches in the Parisian region are
rather scarce.
