The Subject Centre is pleased to announce the following event:

POSTGRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES IN LINGUISTICS OF MODERN
LANGUAGES: A WORKSHOP

Date: Saturday 5 February (11 a.m-3.30p.m).
Venue: London Metropolitan University (near Moorgate tube).

This free workshop is for potential postgraduates in all areas of
Modern Languages Linguistics.

We expect to be able to offer some help with the travel expenses of
students attending the workshop. (People coming long distances will
have priority.)

Please note: this is NOT a publicity event for any particular
institution or Department, but is part of a general drive to increase
the number of postgraduates in the Linguistics of Modern Languages.

The programme will include short talks, Question & Answer sessions and
time for small group or individual discussions. It will cover:

GENERAL & PRACTICAL ISSUES
An overview of possibilities at Masters' level and beyond; funding and
career opportunities; what being a postgraduate is really like at the
various stages; what to do in order to start next year.

AREAS OF STUDY AND POSSIBLE RESEARCH TOPICS
A panel of experienced supervisors will outline what research in their
areas involves, and suggest some priorities and possible topics for
research projects. Areas will include most of the following:
Description & Analysis of Modern Languages (in their different
varieties) - Phonology, Grammar, Lexis, Discourse; History of Modern
Languages; Second Language Acquisition and other areas of Applied
Linguistics, as related to Modern Languages; Sociolinguistics and
Modern Languages, including Variation.

Speakers will be well-known experts in their fields and experienced
supervisors.
