Dear list members,
I have only recently become aware of the field of caqdas and have concluded
that it could be extremely useful for one of our current projects.
I have seen that there is a wide range of commercial and free software
available, but am unsure which ones may be most suitable for our purpose.
We are conducting time-based observations of wild birds, which are being
recorded onto dictaphone, with each group of observations being followed
by a reading of the current time. These records are then transcribed into
a spreadsheet.
Very Simple Example:
The tape may contain two comments ten seconds apart
DUCKS 3 FLYING ZONE A
GULLS 17 SITTING ZONE B 10:33:25
which is transcribed as
DU 3 F A
UU 17 S B
subsequently the times for each observation are calculated
DU 3 F A 10:33:15
UU 17 S B 10:33:25
Other information is recorded also in the same manner.
We are now recording the continuous output of the dictaphone into
a laptop and would like to find some software which will allow us to
efficiently transcribe and code the recorded data without the need to
record the time after each collection of observations (by using the relative
time of thee sound file).
Any advice regarding the suitability of currently available software
would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
