medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
6. January is the feast day of:
Epiphany (c. 4 BCE) Properly a celebration of several epiphanies,
although the only one usually remembered is the wise men turning up
on their famous visit.
Wiltrudis (d. c. 986) Wiltrudis was a duchess of Bavaria. She
became a nun in c. 947 when her husband Berthold died. In c. 976 she
founded the convent of Bergen.
Erminold (d. 1121) Tradition says Erminold was a child oblate at
Hirsau in Germany. He later became abbot of Lorsch, but resigned
when a dispute arose about his election. In 1114 he became abbot of
Prufening, and abbot in 1117. He was so strict that some of his
monks attacked him, and he died of his injuries.
Guarinus (Guerin) (d. 1150) Guarinus was a monk of Molesmes who, as
abbot of St. John of the Alps (near Geneva), affiliated his moanstery
to Clairvaux. He became bishop of Sion (Switzerland).
A modern saint: John Charles Melchior from Sezze (d. 1670) JC was an
Italian of poor family. He wanted to become a priest but was barely
literate, which had become an impediment by that time. So instead he
became a lay brother at Naziano. He was famous for holiness,
simplicity, excessive asceticism, and charity, besides writing
several mystical works. He was canonized in 1959.
