medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (25. January) is the feast day of:
Conversion of Paul
Juventinus and Maximinus (d. 363) Two officers in Julian the
Apostate's guard, Juventinus and Maximinus were martyred, apparently
executed as insurgents who insulted the emperor. They were overheard
speaking insultingly of Julian's edicts against the veneration of
relics. Julian offered them a pardon if they would sacrifice to his
gods, but they refused, so they were flogged and beheaded at Antioch.
John Chrysostom wrote their eulogy.
Publius (d. c. 380) Publius was a noble of Zeugma. He sold all his
gods and gave the proceeds to the poor and when to be a hermit near
the Euphrates. In time, he became abbot of his community of hermits
and ruled very strictly. P. also founded two more monastic
communities, one for Greeks and one for Syrians.
Praejectus (Prix) (d. 676) Praejectus was a native of Auvergne who
became bishop of Clermont in c. 666. He was a good bishop, founding
monasteries, churches, and facilities to care for the poor. But he
got too involved in politics. When the governor of Marseilles was
executed for a supposed conspiracy against the king of Austrasia,
some of his followers blamed P. for the death. They hunted P. down
and assassinated him.
Poppo (d. 1048) Poppo was a native of Flanders who became a monk and
soon abbot of Stablo, Malmedy, and a whole heap of other monasteries.
He became Emperor Henry II's chief henchman for the reform of
monasteries.
