Dear Olga, at the Troitsky site in Novgorod we also found a few remains from
the later medieval levels, interestingly there were none in the lower levels
nor any at Gorodishche (9th-10th) despite the known trade links with the
north - they are present at Birka for example.

Subject: [ZOOARCH] black rat
Dear colleagues!
I am working now with osteological material from Suzdal
region (300 km to the east of Moscow, Russia) and Vologda region (360 km
to the north of Moscow). In material from the Middle Age layers (from 11
to 13 centuries) I found a few black rats remains (mandibles). My question
is: does anybody know anything about rat's expansion ways in North-East
Europe and in Russia. Perhaps there are any references about this subject?
With great respect
