Developments in Urban Morphology
Urban morphology is a branch of urban studies that deals with the form and
structure of a settlement: It studies complex and intricate types of forms
and how different factors set their mark upon the whole city. In this way
urban morphology examines the configuration of the urban form as well as
the relationship between the individual forms and the city as a whole,
from the formative years of the city to its subsequent transformations.
Urban form can in fact be compared to palimpsest, where layers created by
generation after generation marked the inherited urban landscape by
changing it or adapting it without entirely erasing its previous layers.
To understand the urban landscape as it appears today it is necessary to
know how it was formed. The urban layers, the footprint of each society,
can in part be identified in the urban form. The city is a mirror of the
people that inhabit it and have inhabited it: their values, culture and
history. To understand the city, it is essential to examine its history.
Today urban morphology is a fast growing interdisciplinary field
attracting scholars from geography, architecture, history, archaeology,
planning, sociology and even philosophy and psychology.
