Subject: Job Vacancy - UNESCO
Director of Statistics, UNESCO
Due to my appointment as Chief Executive of the new Centre for health
and social care information in England, the post of Director of
Statistics of UNESCO is vacant. The main responsibility of the UNESCO
post is to direct the UNESCO Institute for Statistics based in Montreal,
Canada.
The Institute is the lead agency for cross-national data on education,
science, technology, culture and communications. This involves:
- the collection of internationally and regionally comparable data
- the promotion of data for informed use in national and international
policy
- the development of appropriate methodologies
- leadership in the harmonisation of statistical classifications
and systems
- support for statistical capacity building within countries.
The Director has responsibility for managing the Institute as a
semi-autonomous body within UNESCO, creating and implementing its
strategic plans and work programmes. This includes the recruitment,
management and career development of its staff (currently totalling 80).
The Director controls the Institute's finances and takes the lead in
raising the requisite funds.
Of particular significance is the Director's role in assuring the
quality of UNESCO's statistical activities through the adoption of
professional standards throughout the Organisation. Close collaborative
relationships must be maintained with other agencies involved in data
collection and with users of the data.
Closing date: 10 July 2005
The post is at D-2 level common to the United Nations system.
