What is Democs?
Democs (Deliberative Meeting of Citizens) is a new approach to involving citizens in public policy issues. It is a conversation card activity in an A4 box. 4-8 people play at any one time. You don't need to know anything about the topic before playing. A Democs lasts for 1.5 - 2.5 hours.
Topics
Most Democs are on contentious topics with a biomedical flavour, like stem cell research, vaccinations, animal experimentation, and nanotechnology.
There are also Democs on climate change and GM food. We are developing kits on Equalities and Sustainable Development.
Democs for young people/in schools will be available this year. Kits are written on a specific topic with experts, to ensure that a broad range of views are represented on the cards, and that kits are unbiased.
This training day is for those active in:
* science communication
* patient and public involvement
* participation and public engagement in regeneration or local decision making
* anyone who wants to help citizens to discuss contentious topics
