Over the past year the DISC project (Delivering Inclusion in Science
Communication) has been working to highlight and clarify the challenges
and barriers faced by both BME (black and minority ethnic) groups and
science communicators in delivering greater inclusion of ethnic
minorities in science communication. Reports detailing these barriers
and how to overcome them are available from www.ishangohouse.com/DISC
and

For the second year of the project we have developed three separate
residential training sessions for BME groups and the science
communication community. These training sessions will bring the two
groups (BME groups and science communicators) together to facilitate the
creation of sustainable and empowering networks between groups, by
engaging them in dialogue and joint working.
Places on the training programme are FREE (including accommodation and
meals).
The date and locations for the three residential training programmes are
as follows:
Northwest Region: 15th & 16th September 2005
Venue: The Holly Lodge Hotel, 70 London Road, Holmes Chapel, Cheshire
Midlands Region: 22nd & 23rd September 2005
Venue: Hayley Conference Centres, Ettington Chase, Ettington,
Stratford-upon-Avon
London Region: 29th & 30th September 2005
Hayley Conference Centres, Wotton House, Dorking, Surrey
The residential training programme will:
* enable participants to understand the processes involved in
organisational change with regard to delivering diversity and inclusion
in science communication for BME's
* share national data from a range of sources on the status of
BME's in the scientific enterprise
* enable participants to understand, develop and utilise the good
practice of BME and science communication case studies
* update participants on other DISC year two activities on BME
Market Intelligence and Representations BME's in science
* inform participants of the various funding opportunities for
science communication activities and provide them with support in
working up ideas and proposals in partnership with BME groups
In order to ensure the maximum benefit of this limited resource, we ask
that all participants commit to staying for the full duration of the
programme over the two days. The programme is structured to provide an
opportunity for science communication organisations to make links with
BME partners to explore ideas and collaborations and share development
ideas on the second day of the training.
Places are limited and offered on a first come first served basis. If
you would like to discuss participation in any of the workshops please
contact Alice Taylor-Gee ([log in to unmask], 020 7019 4940) or
Malleh Dangen ([log in to unmask], 0161 273 8808)
DISC is supported by COPUS, NESTA and The Office of Science and
Technology
