PORTFOLIO MANAGERS, RCUK SCIENCE IN SOCIETY

Research Councils UK (RCUK) is a strategic partnership set up to champion
science, engineering and technology supported by the seven UK Research
Councils.
To improve delivery and yield internal efficiency gains a new RCUK Group
on Science in Society will be set up from 1st April 2005. This group will
cover the following areas:
• raising public awareness of, and engagement in, science and
innovation
• science in schools
This will entail the delivery of a range of demanding objectives which
feature prominently in the “Science and Innovation Investment Framework
2004-2014” and make a substantial contribution to delivering the
Government’s science and society agenda.
The unit will be hosted by ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council),
established by Royal Charter in 1965, one of seven UK Research Councils.
These posts are for Portfolio Managers in the new Science in Society Unit.
The postholders will be responsible for delivering, coordinating and
facilitating the development of collective Research Council activities to
be transferred to the new unit and development and delivery of future
activities in these areas.
Responsibilities will include maintaining an overview of public engagement
and schools activities supported by the Councils, OST and others, and
identifying, promoting and supporting collaboration. The posts will report
to the Head of the RCUK Science in Society Unit.
The successful candidates should have an understanding of science
communication, government, Research Council and university policies,
programmes and issues relating to Science in Society.
