think again! - This blog by Jan Nordgreen offers a new mathematical
challenge and entertaining quote every day, "Sundays, Nundays, Rainy
Days, and Nonexisiting Days included". The comments feature is
regularly used by readers to discuss the challenges, the original
problem often only a starting point for the discussion. Plus
particularly liked the variety of quotes - this Wednesday's was from
Steven Wright: "You can't have everything. Where would you put it?"!

Hedy Lamarr - Born 9 Nov 1913, Vienna, Austria, died 19 Jan 2000,
Florida, USA.
Hedy Lamarr is most well known for her successful career as an actress
in the 30's and 40's and was nicknamed "the most beautiful woman in
films". However until 1997, when she won the EFF Pioneer award, her
significant contribution to physics and communications technology were
unknown to the wider community. Lamarr and avante-garde composer
George Antheil developed a frequency-hopping device which was used by
the US military for secure communications. This technology now is
used everyday in cell phones, wireless Internet and defence satellites.

Live maths
Maths events at the Cambridge Festival of Science - On Saturday 19th
March 2005, the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (the home of Plus)
will open its doors from 10am to 4pm for a day of mathematical
demonstrations, displays and talks aimed at various age groups from 8+
and the general public. In addition to the biennial Maths Faculty
Public Open Day, with displays and demonstrations for a general
audience by groups from the mathematics departments, the day will also
feature the MMP's Hands On Maths Fair for age 5+. The MMP will also
be running a demonstration of a genuine WWII Enigma cipher machine in
the afternoon - drop in between 2pm-4pm.
Three mathematical talks will take place too - at 11am in the Isaac
Newton Institute Dr Robert Hunt will talk about 'Mathematics Past, Present
and Beyond' (age 14+, see
http://www.newton.cam.ac.uk/nsw/lecture2005); at 12 noon in the Centre
for Mathematical Sciences Claire Ellis talks on 'Cracking Enigma' (age
8+, no need to book but turn up in good time to secure a seat); while
in the afternoon Professor Tom Kine will explain 'How to Hunt a
Submarine' (age 14+, provisional time 2.30, TBC; no need to
book). More details of all events will appear on the MMP and Maths
Faculty websites shortly (http://mmp.maths.org).
