On a similar line what do you do if you find a student has put their work up
for sale on an essay bank? At that point it is their intellectual property
and is therefore theirs to sell. But it is intended to become collusion with
a purchaser

Subject: Plagiarism before submission?
I wonder how list members feel about cases where the student is caught
before submitting plagiarised materials. I'm not talking about essay
assignments, I'm referring to cases where the student proposes a final
year project already acquired in a finished state, and then over several
weeks/months pretends to be carrying out research, gathering and analysing
information, evaluating alternatives and developing solutions, perhaps
even presenting "draft sections" of a dissertation to the project
supervisor - only for the latter to discover it's all a sham. Has the
student already committed plagiarism, or does the offence begin with the
submission? If it's not already plagiarism, what do your institutions do
about such cases of serious academic dishonesty? What do *you* think we
ought to be doing?
