Freelance Consultant
Interpretation/learning consultant at The Women’s Library, London
Metropolitan University, Old Castle Street, London, E1 7NT
Fee £8000
The Women’s Library is looking for an Interpretation consultant to work
with academic course leaders, students and one community group [the
partners] to consult on and participate in forming content and
interpretation for our new ‘permanent’ display.
To set the ball rolling, the curators at the Women’s Library have put
together an initial list of ‘treasures’ to provide an introduction to
our collections which inspire staff, are visually appealing and offer a
wide range of interpretation potential and links into other areas.
However, we now need to test and develop this selection with our partners.
The new display will be used as a learning resource for students at
London Metropolitan University and for their communities in the
surrounding area (Tower Hamlets, Newham, Islington, Hackney).
Students and community groups will build the exhibition over its life (5
years) by contributing to ‘projects’ (these could be varied such as
oral history, object displays, creative work) which will interpret and
display our collections. For the pilot display we have identified
course leaders in Digital Media, History and Fine Art and we will also
be working with a group of Bangladeshi women from the Heba project.
There may be one other community project in addition, subject to funding.
We are looking for a consultant who can:
1. consult with course leaders to identify appropriate students and
specific curriculum areas to take part in the first stage of building
the exhibition (March – April)
2. develop and facilitate object based focus sessions with the partners
(students, the Women’s Library Student Advisory Panel and Bagladeshi
women from the Heba project) to gain feedback on the relevance and
interest the items may inspire (April)
3. With course leaders and community leaders develop ‘projects’ which
will enable the exhibition audiences to select and interpret further
objects producing elements of the exhibition and or contribute to the
events programme (April – July)
4. Together with staff at The Women’s Library and course leaders
identify learning outcomes for the ‘projects’ and for the exhibition
over all (April – May)
5. Evaluate the ‘projects’ and produce a tool kit to be used with new
groups in future years (August)
The consultancy will take place between March and August 2005. The
exhibition will open in late September 2005. Experience of
interpretation work with different communities will be highly desirable
as well as an understanding of identifying learning outcomes and
evaluating projects. We would offer a fee of £8000 for the consultancy.
For further information and discussion about the consultancy please
