Postgraduate methods seminar day: refugee research issues
10.30am-4.30pm March 11th 2005 The Priory Centre, York
Call for papers and delegates
A growing number of research students are involved in research on and with
refugee and asylum seeker populations. Inherent in such work are certain
methodological dilemmas, issues and problems. The aim of this seminar day
is to provide an opportunity for post-graduate researchers to discuss these
important issues. We are calling for paper presentations from postgraduates
on any methodological issue, in particular:
- Qualitative and quantitative research dilemmas (interviewing, focus
groups, issues of language and interpretation, questionnaire and survey
issues, sampling etc.)
- Accessing refugee and asylum seeking populations
- Involving ‘gatekeepers’ in the research process
- Ethical issues
- Researcher ‘positionality’ (insider/outsider issues, ethnographic
dilemmas and experiences)
The day will include a keynote address by Dr Lynette Kelly from the
University of Warwick, followed by approximately eight 15-minute papers and
time for questions. This seminar is organised by postgraduates for
postgraduates. There will be a delegate fee of £10 to cover costs
(includes lunch & refreshments).
For paper presentations please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words
by 14 February 2005 to [log in to unmask] *NOTE EXTENSION* It is

publication in an edited book or working paper series.
