Thanks for that Dan and Harvey. Yes findloc() is what I was after.
Converting the problem into a logical array and using maxloc() was just a
solution I explored for my particular problem, but findloc() is much nicer
and generalised.
Robin, I agree about hand coded loops currently being faster. However, this
problem is easily parallelisable, and I think on multi cored CPUs (and
whatever is coming in the future) it should be up to the vendor.
