I really appreciate your explicit instructions on filling an array. I am
going to try that next. If I were to send you a data file, would you be
willing to tell me what I need to read it using FORTRAN95? It's a 35KB test
file in the following format:

-25.000 -22.000 -9.000 9.000
11 21.000 22.000 13.000 2.000 -2.000 4.000
17.000 32.000 46.000 68.000
There is descriptive information preceded by "//" comment lines, and 10
values preceded by a count number, 4 "Traces" of 750 values each. I presume
this qualifies as formatted data? The eventual goal is to be able to
manipulate this data using algorithms converted from FORTRAN77, yet I
haven't learned how to read the dang file yet.
Also, regarding the triangle program: That is an example from a nice
web-based tutorial from the University of Liverpool. I'm more interested in
figuring out how to compile programs that work rather than programs that
work real efficiently at this point. However, I'm looking forward to playing
with your code in the next phase of my learning.
I have ordered ALL the books suggested by listers, and really appreciate the
suggestions. I expect the books by the beginning of next week, and in the
meantime I'll just muddle along as best I can. Thanks again for all your
