Hi Arthur,
some units/departments are using messaging instead of e-mail.
For as far as I've heard there are not much problems with it, but
when you have users enrolled in more than two courses/communities
Messaging is not that handy, because a user has to enter the course
to see if there's a new message.
We've created for that purpose a kind of messaging collector through
all courses and presented it as a module on the My institution page.
Another problem is that all messages and attachements are stored in
the course. We already have had some courses that went over their
quota because there was too much storage used by all messages (f.i. a
100 kb Word document send to all users (f.i. 30) takes 3 Mb from the
course quotum.)
You also have to check one thing where I'm not really sure about.
When you remove a user form the course his messages (and included
attachements) might be left as orphans on the server in the course
folder. We still have to investigate this problem, but have a
suspicion in that direction.
